If you're looking for unique gifts or treasures for yourself or others, you've come to the right place! The Katbird Shop is two shops in one: I sell American-made fine and functional art, with a focus on local artists. I also carry unique vintage and antique treasures (or junk, depending upon your point of view).
Right now I am open most Saturdays 10-5 but recommend calling first. I am also open by appointment and by chance. You can visit the store on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram for photos and updates.
The Katbird Shop opened in 2005 in the heart of Downtown Schenectady. Located just a couple of blocks from Proctors Theatre, my building has its own story: it once housed the Jersey Ice Cream Factory, and was home to a young Chester Arthur, 21st president of the United States.
I am often asked how I came up with the store's name. It's a play on the phrase "sitting in the catbird seat." According to Merriam-Webster, legendary baseball announcer Red Barber used the expression, although it's unclear if he coined the phrase, or started using it after publication of James Thurber's short story (and one of my favorites) "The Catbird Seat."
You'll be sitting pretty with a gift/purchase from The Katbird Shop!
